Freezer Cooking. Saves Money?
So, we came to a point where we needed to cut back on our grocery money. I will break down the recipes tomorrow. But for now, I would like to share with you our journey.
My brother moved to Utah from Missouri last August. He taunted us with majestic mountains and enticing snow very early in the season (October) compared to Missouri. By March of this year God said, go. So we found a house (with the help of my brother) and traveled over 16 hours, a snow storm, Lyme flares and my husbands diabetes giving him a hard time. 3 vehicles , a U-Haul , a trailer and a small load (I was pulling) first time (terrified) mountain driving and a fishtail later - we made it!
So my parents and our family of four committed to the first years to stay together as we get settled. My brother had his own place but his roommate got married and moved out so he moved in with us (I convinced him) to save money while he looked for a house to buy.
So, as he does that, and God leads him where he wants to go we feed a family of 7 combined. Now that we are looking to buy a house next year and need to save every penny, I discovered that I can cut my 600/month bill way down buy buying bulk, and freezing prepared/separated food.
Here we have a total of 20 dinners, 10 lunches, 6 months of breakfast plus fresh fruit and veggies and snacks , also my husbands lunches for 1 month (including the storage containers and bags) we spent about 370. WOW!
Chili. This is close to a 7.00 meal (meat was free) bulk beans for 3.50 - bulk tomato sauce @ 2.49 - 1 can diced tomatoes @ 1.00. (Onion and garlic we have on hand) this comes out to .70 a person. (Plus lunch the next day)
I bought 6 chicken breast (5lbs) cut them in half and split them up for a dinner each. 6.00 for this dinner with a sauce (we will have the broth on hand) and make rice and beans to serve and 1 pound of veggies. 0.60 a person!
Breakfast sausage. Every Sunday have biscuits and gravy with eggs and sausage. 5.82 for this meal. We make the biscuits. This includes 3 for the sausage, 1.30 for a dozen eggs, 1.22 for a half gallon of milk (exaggerating the amount of milk) so $0.58 each person. Amazing!
I also made Corn Chowder 5.05 for the meal and $0.55 a person. Menudo 8.68 - $0.88/person. Chicken Noodle Soup 2.02 (we had the carrots, celery, made the noodles) $0.20/person!!!
Tomorrow we are cooking 8 more meals. (4 split in halves) A Roast, Beef Stew, Sweet Potato Soup and Carrot Soup
Each one of the meals I listed with the exception of the Breakfast Sausage meal and BBQ Chicken was bought/made and split in half. The others we got 4 meals.
Also, for each dinner , some every other dinner is a 2-4 lunch meals so in total we are getting 30-35 meals total.!!!!!
I hope this helps. Thanks forletting me share with you. If you have tips, advice or any of the like - I would love to hear it!
Till later..
